The Dialogues on Zen Meditation
This book contains nearly 300 dialogues between teachers and students, providing detailed explanations of all the issues that arise in meditation. This includes the attitudes and methods of meditation: koan meditation, huatou meditation, silent illumination meditation, and breath meditation. It addresses potential problems and situations that may arise during meditation, as well as how to discern authentic teachers in the practice. It also covers topics such as self and non-self, dependent origination and karma, precepts and karmic relationships, consciousness and the five aggregates, Zen and dreams, Chinese Zen and Japanese Zen, Buddhism and death, Buddhism and art, Buddhism and education, Buddhism and family, abortion and death, euthanasia and suicide, as well as Buddhism's view on materialism.
The Essence of Zen Buddhism
Zen directly points to the true nature of Buddhism, encouraging practitioners to rely on themselves to solve their own problems. In fact, Zen describes those who seek Buddhism outside of their own minds as following non-Buddhist teachings—teachings outside of Buddhism. Because Zen promotes self-reliance, it differs from other religious traditions that involve supplication.
The Root of All Problems in Life
From the perspective of Zen, most problems arise from attachment to the sense of self or repetitive thoughts. By ignoring these thoughts and not engaging with them, they will eventually cease to arise and bother you. For most issues that arise during meditation, ignoring them is the best approach.
Meditation Can Solve All Problems
For example, imagine parasites attaching themselves to the body to suck blood. If you discover that your body is covered with these parasites, one method of self-rescue is to painstakingly remove them one by one. This would take a long time, require a great deal of effort, and could lead to significant blood loss. A simpler solution is to sprinkle salt on them, causing the parasites to fall off. Zen is like the salt treatment for these parasites; it doesn't address each individual problem.
