Summary

"Make Your Mind an Ocean" is a collection of teachings by His Holiness the  Ven. Lama Thubten Yeshe, offering clear and profound insights into core Buddhist principles, especially related to the nature of the mind, emotional awareness, compassion, and wisdom. It serves as an accessible introduction to Tibetan Buddhism and the essence of the Buddha’s teachings for modern readers.

Main Themes of the Book:
The Mind as an Ocean
The title symbolizes the idea that while the surface of the ocean may be turbulent, its depths remain calm and vast. Similarly, the mind's true nature is spacious and peaceful, beyond temporary emotions. The Dalai Lama encourages us to observe the mind without being swept away by passing feelings, cultivating inner stability and awareness.

Understanding and Transforming Negative Emotions
The book explores the roots of emotions like anger, jealousy, and desire, and offers guidance based on Buddhist insights such as emptiness, impermanence, and compassion to help transform suffering into wisdom.

Compassion and Wisdom as the Path to Happiness
True happiness, he emphasizes, does not come from external sources, but from a compassionate heart and an altruistic motivation. Practicing kindness, patience, and understanding in daily life is a key theme.

Bridging Buddhism with Science and Daily Life
With an open-minded approach, the Ven. Lama Thubten Yeshe connects Buddhist wisdom with psychology, science, and human experience, making ancient teachings relevant and practical for everyday living.

Mindfulness and Meditation Practices
The book includes basic guidance on meditation and mindfulness, helping readers create inner space and clarity amidst the busyness of modern life.

The essence of the book is this: We do not need to suppress or chase after emotions. Instead, like the ocean, we can learn to hold space for everything, with clarity and depth.
This is a simple yet profound entry point into Buddhist philosophy, ideal for anyone seeking inner peace and wisdom.

Excerpt from the original text

hen I talk about mind, I’m not just talking about my mind, my trip.I’m talking about the mind of each and every universal living being.

The way we live, the way we think — everything is dedicated to material pleasure. We consider sense objects to be of utmost importance and materialistically devote ourselves to whatever makes us happy, famous or popular. Even though all this comes from our mind, we are so totally preoccupied   by external objects that we never look within, we never question why we find them so interesting.

As long as we exist, our mind is an inseparable part of us. As a result, we are always up and down. It is not our body that goes up and down, it’s our mind — this mind whose way of functioning we do not understand. Therefore, sometimes we have to examine ourselves — not just our body, but our mind. After all, it is our mind that is alwaystelling us what to do. We have to know our own psychology, or, in religious terminology, perhaps, our inner nature. Anyway, no matter what we call it, we have to know our own mind.
