Book Summary

Clouds and Water by Master Hsing Yun is a profound exploration of Buddhist wisdom and life philosophy. The book uses the symbols of "clouds" and "water" to convey deep teachings on the nature of the mind and life. Through a poetic form, it reflects the richness of Chinese culture and its philosophical depth.

The core themes of the book revolve around the impermanence of life, the freedom of the mind, and the importance of cultivating a compassionate and inclusive attitude. Clouds symbolize the ever-changing and boundless nature of the mind, reminding us that change is natural and should be embraced without attachment. Water represents purity, inclusiveness, and the ability to nourish all things while maintaining clarity and fluidity.

Excerpt from the original text

Good deeds stand tall like a green pine.

While evil deeds bloom like flowers.

It seems the pine is not as brilliant as the flowers.

When the frost comes, the pine will still stand tall,

While the flowers, withered, can be seen no more.

When theory and practice are balanced

There will be no conflict between self and other.

When the clouds are gone, there will be no shadows.

An ocean replenished from thousands of rivers never stops filling.

The vast space of the universe is my home.
